This Project will build ten safe, affordable houses with cost-effective, prefabricated cabins that can be easily adapted as living quarters and one life center. In addition to housing, we will provide comprehensive services such as financial assistance, intensive case management, financial literacy workshops, entrepreneurship workshops, transportation services, access to medical and dental services, and access to childcare for those residents working a second shift or taking evening classes.
Homeless shelters in Greenville are full to capacity, with Greenville Homeless Alliance reporting there is a shortage of at least 2,500 beds. Besides the shortage of beds, many people have turned away from shelters due to the size of their family; having a male child over age 10, or being disabled. As for affordable housingthere are currently 72,000 subsidized housing units in South Carolina. Only one out of every five low-income people in the state is able to obtain one of those units.
We believe that our shed home solution will be effective in addressing homelessness in Greenville. Studies in California have shown the benefits of using shed homes in reducing homelessness. Studies conducted in New York have shown that transitional housing communities that provide on-site, wrap-around services for residents are more successful in keeping residents off the streets and moving towards self-sufficiency. The goal of Unity Project, Inc is to not only provide housing but life tools.
once these families go through the affordable housing program they will transition out, purchase their own home, and become upstanding citizens in the community. UnityProject, Inc will follow up with them every year for three years.
