Challenge

Afghanistan's education system has traditionally relied on teaching methods of rote memorization and dictation. School enrollment has been low and dropout rates high. Afghanistan has one of the world's lowest literacy rates. Teachers who have not used their skills in decades must be re-trained and taught modern methods that encourage critical thinking and other cognitive skills central to independent thinking and learning.

Solution

AIL will focus on rural areas in Afghanistan enrolling 140 teachers who will complete a two-week seminar and learn how to use interactive teaching methods like role-play and group work. Teachers will learn to make lesson plans and integrate new curriculum on peace and health into their classes.

Long-Term Impact

140 teachers will emerge from a two- week course with modern teaching skills and be able to engage students in interactive study. Teachers will have renewed confidence and be more effective in the classroom. Students will be taught to be independent thinkers with critical thinking skills and problem solving capacity with open and inquiring minds.
