At the start of this new year we reflect on what has been achieved in 2018 and how this has changed lives for the better. AIL’s Learning Centers (LCs) give people the opportunity to learn, to network with other women and to gain both knowledge and increase their capacity.
In 2018, 28,121 students (19,095 female, 9,026 male) attended courses at 48 LCs. The courses offered at centers vary according to need. Literacy and sewing are popular, also English, computers, math, weaving. There are some centers that are specialist such as 3 that are preschool only and 1 that is boys computing, 2 that offer computers/English combination classes only. There are 32 centers in the Herat area (16 rural) and 13 in Kabul.
Teachers are a vital part of the success of the AIL education program. AIL provides a high quality teacher training education in modern, interactive, student centered teaching methodologies. Since 1996, 28,000 teachers have been trained in interactive teaching techniques over 9 million Afghan students have benefitted teachers who used the training they received from AIL in their careers. In 2018, 500 teachers received AIL training.
Zarimah says, “I teach in the boys section of a school. My problems with teaching include lack of experience and information. As I started teaching after twelfth grade I didn’t know about education psychology and therefore didn’t behave well in classrooms. I realized my weakness but did not know how to fix it. Now I know that I should work to understand my students and their problems. I should get my students to trust me and to accept me an honest person they can look up to.”
