AIL has always emphasized the importance of quality teaching as the underpinning of an effective education system for Afghanistan. In 2019, AIL trained 979 teachers (579 female) in modern teaching methods. Some teachers also participated in workshops on various subjects such as the role of women, leadership, peace and health.

Attending a quality teacher training seminar can be life changing for a teacher, especially for those who have had little formal instruction in how to be a teacher. Here is one story, Ahmad from Balkh Province said, “After I graduated from 12th grade I became a teacher of English for 3 years at a private course.  A friend told me of job opportunities at governmental schools. I passed the required exams and so got a job at the high school. A while ago the supervisor from the department told me to write a yearly and monthly plan. I did not have experience of this and was angry. Then the school principal told me the Directorate of Education planned to hold methodology seminars in cooperation with AIL. I learned a great deal during the 10 day seminar such as leadership, controlling the class, planning and hourly targets. It has made a great difference in my teaching life.”

Thank you for your interest in improving teaching standards in Afghanistan.

SDG Goal 4 – Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.
