Monitoring Human Rights Violations in Afghanistan

By MADRE | MADRE

Thanks to your solidarity with women and girls’ human rights defenders in Afghanistan, MADRE partners continue to play an essential monitoring role by documenting human rights violations and gender-based violence committed by the Taliban and their supporters. Afghan activists are learning how to identify and safely document a broad swath of gender-based violence that may amount to gender persecution–the only legal charge under international criminal law that can be used to holistically hold perpetrators of gender-based crimes accountable, apart from sexual violence.

As we have seen through MADRE’s long-term partnerships, enhancing women’s documentation knowledge and coordination establishes the foundation for accountability processes that can generate sustainable solutions for social change. Through an accompanying documentation and advocacy manual in Dari and Pashto, we guide partners on safely utilizing this documentation to raise public awareness of the issue and advocate for investigation, accountability, services, and reparations.

As we continue working with human rights defenders in 2023, in our next stage of response, we will continue to fund collaboration and networking among human rights defenders—both within Afghanistan and internationally—so that the Afghan women’s movement is sustained and united, even though activists are forced to work underground and in exile. This work includes providing technical assistance and capacity strengthening to women human rights defenders in Afghanistan, including a series of training on digital/physical security and safety strategies for Afghan women and girl activists.

This year, we will continue to mobilize international advocacy efforts among stakeholders including states, the UN, and civil society organizations on behalf of Afghan communities and demand the substantive participation of women in all policy discussions and related processes affecting Afghanistan.

Thank you for your partnership and generous support as we work with women and girls’ human rights defenders to monitor and report violations in Afghanistan. As we look to MADRE partners for their leadership and knowledge, we create sustainable and global peace for all.
