Resourcing Urgent Needs for Afghan Women and Girls

By MADRE | MADRE

Since the Taliban takeover, MADRE has accelerated financial aid to meet the urgent needs of local women's organizations and activists in Afghanistan through grants that resource the work of women leaders to sustain their communities and build peace. With your support, MADRE’s rapid response grants have continued to enable Afghan women leaders and local organizations to provide vital humanitarian aid to meet the immediate needs of Afghan communities and mobilize security, protection, and relocation efforts.

In addition to resourcing urgent relief work, MADRE has provided for the housing and living expenses of over 600 displaced women human rights defenders in Kabul and in rural provinces, many of whom are the primary breadwinners and heads of household. MADRE is further funding stipends for partner organizations' staff, such as individuals running shelters and safehouses, who have been working without a salary for several months.

Lastly, MADRE also funded a local organization to employ two female psychotherapists to provide 100 women activists in Kabul with secure individual and/or group counseling. As an activist shared, “This program really helped me and I was able to fight the hardships and problems of relocation in a great spirit and in the right way.” Another young woman stated, “In the future, I have plans to solve life's problems and serve my people in every possible way, as well as to be a useful person in this society. Thank you for the support enabling us to get back our energies and to keep going on.”

This financial and psychosocial support ensures that women leaders are able to meet their own and their families’ needs, which in turn allows them to re-engage in their work for a peaceful and gender-just Afghan society.

With your generous donations, MADRE will continue to support women and girls during the ongoing crisis and enable the continuity of Afghan women's organizations, including underground and in exile.
