Afghanistan Emergency Fund

Thank you for your generous donation to the Afghanistan Emergency Fund. Donations to this GlobalGiving fund continue to make a difference, helping Afghan communities to survive harsh conditions caused by human-made disasters and natural hazards, and responding to ongoing forced displacement.

Since our last report, donations from the Afghanistan Emergency Fund have supported grants to 11 high-impact and community-led nonprofit organizations at the forefront of the ongoing humanitarian crisis. Tragically, since then, Afghanistan’s Herat province has been hit by several devastating earthquakes. The earthquakes killed thousands of people and created additional humanitarian needs in the country. The majority of those killed, injured, or missing were women, given their restricted employment and education opportunities outside the home. Although GlobalGiving launched an Afghanistan Earthquake Relief Fund, fortunately, many of our partners in the country were well positioned to respond thanks to grants from the Afghanistan Emergency Fund. 

Here is a short description of some of the critical work you’ve supported: 

• Enabled Children Initiative Ltd (ECI) is focused on supporting children and youth with disabilities by providing educational opportunities, community awareness, social integration, and emergency relief, including in response to the earthquakes in Herat province. ECI also launched the first day school for children with disabilities in the capital, Kabul. 

• The HALO Trust has previous experience in Afghanistan’s earthquake-affected areas and moved quickly to deploy excavators and ambulances for first aid and evacuation. Excavation of victims’ bodies and homes continues. The HALO Trust is also distributing food packages and cooking gas in Zenda Jan and other affected districts. 

• Lighthouse Relief is supporting Afghan refugees in Greece who comprise the majority of refugees and asylum seekers in the country. Many make dangerous and deadly journeys to Greece, and Lighthouse Relief has supported survivors with mental health and psychosocial support, food, and hygiene items. The organization also supports Afghans in registering asylum claims and receiving case management. 

• Aseel Foundation is providing emergency response packages to women-led households and vulnerable communities in Afghanistan through its community-led Atalan (Pashto for 'Heroes') Network, its OMID (Pashto for 'Hope') System on identification, and its Do Good program. The Aseel Foundation supports communities and individuals who are not engaged in commercial activities and need livelihood support, including access to the digital economy, and humanitarian aid.

GlobalGiving’s flexible, trust-based approach to funding before, during, and after crises—including from the Afghanistan Emergency Fund—means partners can pivot to address unforeseen catastrophes when they strike. That includes delivering vital earthquake responses in Afghanistan and continuing activities in the country and with refugees abroad.

Thank you for your generous donation to the Afghanistan Emergency Fund. Your donation to this GlobalGiving fund is making a difference by helping to ensure that Afghans have access to nutritious food, especially during the coldest winter months. It is giving women and girls education and livelihood opportunities, and providing Afghan refugees with critical support after they flee their homeland.

Since September, donations from the fund have supported nine grants to high-impact nonprofit organizations using their knowledge and community networks to meet the critical needs of Afghans, including those who are internally displaced and those seeking asylum. This is vital as Afghan families struggle through the coldest winter in more than 10 years and grapple with the de facto government’s recent bans on women and girls' education and on female aid workers. 

Here is a short description of some of the critical work you’ve supported:

• AAFF is running computer courses for girls in two schools in Afghanistan, while simultaneously providing food distributions to more than 100 families that are food insecure in parts of northern Afghanistan. The nonprofit is also partnering with communities to build wells so they can access safe drinking water year round. 

• Barakat Inc. is offering scholarships and educational opportunities for Afghan girls now displaced to Pakistan, as well as evening classes for women and girls. The organization is also providing salaries to some Afghan female teachers who are allowed to continue working in schools in Afghanistan.

• Aid Afghanistan for Education is growing its online education classes by distributing tablets and using applications to support at-home learning for girls. The organization also supported 100 families with blankets and cash assistance for heating material in response to a difficult winter. Since Ramadan began in mid-March, the organization has been supplying food to 1,000 people daily.

• Internews is supporting journalists whose livelihoods have been affected, conducting digital safety trainings, and helping local agencies provide relevant news, in local languages, to communities that otherwise might not have access to critical information.

• Association for Solidarity with Asylum Seekers and Migrants (ASAM) is working with Afghan refugees in Turkiye by offering them counseling, legal aid, and in-kind assistance to support those staying in Turkiye and those continuing their journeys to seek safety in other countries.
