Emergency Aid for Afghan Families

AIL’s emergency aid program has been very busy not only with the usual demands of caring for needy families as winter approaches but added to that the earthquake victims of October 7.  Here is a October report from AIL:

Dr. Sakena Yacoobi and Afghan Institute of Learning emergency response for victims and affected people of the recent earthquake in Herat, Afghanistan:

Between 7 and 15 October, a series of 6.3 magnitude earthquakes hit Herat Province in western Afghanistan causing significant damage and killing and injuring thousands of people. These earthquakes and aftershocks have left 114,000 people in urgent need of humanitarian and health assistance. To date, nearly 43,400 people across six districts are directly impacted, with almost 23% being children under the age of five. Significant damage was reported in six districts: Injil, Kushk, Rabat-e Sangai, Zindajan, Gulran, and Kohsan.

The reported casualties include at least 2,400 deaths and nearly 9,000 injuries. As of October 19, aftershocks are continuing, leaving communities in a state of fear and unease. Based on initial assessment, at least 40 health facilities have been damaged. Furthermore, over 3,330 homes have been completely destroyed, and extensive damage to infrastructure, including the water network, has been reported. This has left many people living in tents, open areas and other temporary shelters.

The harsh winter is approaching, and prolonged displacement will increase health risks for already vulnerable communities. The poor, overcrowded environment with limited access to water and winter essentials like warm blankets and clothes will likely lead to an increase in the incidence and severity of infectious diseases.

AIL, besides providing educational and health services, also responds with aid in urgent humanitarian crisis situations.  What AIL has provided includes access to basic supplies, food assistance, emergency healthcare, and improved access to water, hygiene and sanitation for affected people in more than 100 villages.

AIL’s emergency response included the distribution to families of kits that include food, blankets, tents, warm clothes, boots, toys, dolls, and other items. These kits have been given out to thousands of people including, women and children who have lost everything.

List of Aid distributed as of October:

1,000 blankets, 100 tents, 6,000 packs of cooked food, 1,000 pairs of clothing, 1,000 pairs of shoes, 1,000 coats, 500kg sugar, 500kg candy, 500kg tea, 100 toys/balls,  2 ambulance services and health teams.
