Many girls in South Africa do not go to school because they cannot afford menstrual products each month. African Angels, a social enterprise in partnership with Days for Girls, creates employment for women in Chintsa East, South Africa, making washable sanitary pads - our Kit. Our beautifully made washable pads last up to three years, reducing plastic pollution, creating employment, and helping keep girls in school. Help us provide our Kit to over 10 000 South African girls by the end of 2022.
Up to 7 million girls in South Africa who do not go to school when they have their period, because they do not have access to menstrual products. Some report using old clothes and newspapers as sanitary pads when they cannot purchase menstrual products meant for periods. This is unhygienic and can cause other health problems and infections. Often, girls and women must choose between buying food and sanitary products because of the costs involved.
Our project intends to provide 10 000 of these girls with a set of our Kit, containing washable sanitary pads, that will last for three years as well as a comprehensive menstrual and reproductive health educational. The girls who receive our Kit will have washable sanitary pads, for the next three years.
10 000 girls who might have missed school every month because they did not have access to menstrual products, now have a sustainable, high quality Kit, made by women who are employed from low income communities to do so.
