Victoria Mxenge is a flagship community housing project built by the South African Homeless People's Federation, a women-led savings scheme and skills transfer project in Cape Town. To continue to demonstrate the importance of creating a self-sustaining and resilient neighbourhood, the community has approached Leaps Development and Advocacy to curate a comprehensive community-based educational support for their children. This proposed programme will offer holistic, educational interventions.
The community faces a threat with rising numbers of unemployed youth as well as not having a school within walking distance for their children. This is directly affecting them as commuting to school requires parents to find work outside the community resulting in the children having no afterschool care.
Launching a community-based, holistic educational support facility with computer-based programmes and internet access will assist improve academic outcomes and access to work opportunities. The educational support programme integrates IT and creativity, allowing youth to self-organise towards self-reliance and mindful leadership.
Through the Reflective Learning aspect of the educational support programme, which integrates IT and creativity, we allow youth to self-organise towards self-reliance and mindful leadership. This enables the community to have a sense of agency and ownership.
