During the past several months, the main focus of the Afterschool Program for Children at Risk has been to support unaccompanied children in developing learning and communication skills. Many of these children face difficulties with socialization and have limited knowledge of the Bulgarian language, which creates challenges in their daily interactions and educational progress.
The program worked with two separate groups – younger and older children –to provide age-appropriate support and activities. Through interactive lessons, educational games, group discussions, and creative workshops, the children improved their ability to communicate, cooperate, and participate more confidently in group settings.
Special attention was given to building trust, emotional security, and motivation for learning. The younger group focused mainly on basic language development and social interaction, while the older children focused on developing independent learning habits and everyday communication skills. In addition, the older participants received guidance and practical preparation for independent living, including support with searching for accommodation, understanding daily responsibilities, and preparing for future employment opportunities. The activities contributed to better integration, increased self-confidence, and stronger peer relationships among participants
