As part of the Afterschool Program for Children at Risk, we provided language support to children who are preparing to start school in Bulgaria for the first time during the upcoming academic year.
The activities focused on helping children develop basic Bulgarian language skills and feel more confident in a school environment. Through interactive games, conversations, creative activities, and age-appropriate learning exercises, the children practiced everyday vocabulary, communication, listening and understanding.
Special attention was given to words and expressions they are likely to encounter at school, as well as basic communication skills needed to interact with teachers and other children. The activities also helped children become familiar with the structure of a school day and encouraged participation, cooperation, and positive communication.
This early language support is particularly important for children who have had limited opportunities to use Bulgarian. It aims to reduce language barriers, support their smoother transition into the Bulgarian education system, and help them begin their first school year with greater confidence and a stronger sense of belonging.
