Challenge

Of the 12,917 people living in Third Ward, according to the Univ. of Houston, over 40% fall below the poverty line. Poverty has a negative impact on a child's learning environment, and ultimately the child's chances to succeed in life. Children in poverty do not receive the same quality of education as children of privilege due to many reasons, from lack of resources to hidden bias. This project will affect 50 children each year in areas of Houston's highest concentration of poverty.

Solution

The After-School Enrichment Program provides academic assistance; healthy food; nutrition and fitness programs; and culture-centered activities. ASEP requires parent involvement through classes and forums. Community partnerships are built to provide economic development classes, counseling services and to foster creativity through art. Children are taught life-skills to help counter the effects of poverty in a culturally safe environment.

Long-Term Impact

Over the last 50 years, SHAPE has serviced 6,000 children in after-school and summer enrichment programs. This project will educate at least 50 children each year, and combat a culture of poverty. ASEP boosts academic performance, promotes healthiness, reduces risky and violent behaviors, provides cultural safety, fosters parent involvement, and builds community partnerships.
