"Afterschool program" at Zenica orphanage

Since this reporting period is during the summer vecation months, the afterschool program was also geared towards fun filled activites to make the summer vacation fun but also educative.

One of the successes worthy of mention is or beneficiaries participation at the «Youth creative convention where we had two selling booths. One was a youth booth run by our two beneficiaries that learned to sew thanks to our afterschool program and they sewed various handmade items on the spot for the bypassers. At the second booth, we had three other beneficiaries that showed their creativity by making various jewlery and art pieces out of paper and plastic cups. Greatest success of this convention was that we were able to activate five beneficiaries from the orphanage and show the community their creativity and their willingness to learn.

During the month of july we also organized dinners for the beneficiaries that fasted during the month of Ramadan. We also invited successful individuals to these dinners from the city so that the youth from the orphange could eat with them, meet them and discuss how they became successful. Some of these successful indivduals work at City Council, Governors office or politics in general. They shared not only their professional background but also their personal story and how they perservered in their profession. Goal of this activity was to inspire the children at the orphanage and to get them to see what it takes to be successful in their community.

For the month of august, we continued creative and educational workshops. We also organized «Sports day for children» where they took part in various fun filled competitive games. Around 80 children from the orphanage participated in these games.   At the end, winners were selected in each category. Chilren were thrilled and asked if they could have such fun sports days more often because they got to play with so many of their peers in a fun a productive way.

For the month of september, we continue with fun activities but also getting the participants ready for school. We also celebrated Eid by organizing a festive gathering with gifts and educational games. Many musical acts were also performed with traditional Bosnian songs so that everyone was well entertained. Particuraly during these holidays, its has become evident that its very important to organize something for the beneficiaries because they feel important, loved as they are offered an opportunity to celebrate that they would others not have as all other children.

We are also happy to report that two of our afterschool program participants were accepted to college. They have been participants of our afterschool program during the last five years and we helped them over the summer to study for the exam to help them enter college. One student is going to study mechanical engineering while the other student will study geography.

This quarters successes:

  • Program participants had a fun filled summer and were kept off the street.
  • They gained new knowledge
  • Two participants obtained useful skills by which they can make income.
  • Participants were introduced at the creative youth convention with their handy crafts.
  • Some were helped to apply and get accepted into college.

Goals for upcoming months:

  • School begins so we start with our regular afterschool program helping with exams and homework.
  • Creative workshop to build skills that could help some to make supplimental income.
  • Organize sports competition days
  • Educational activities on theme of youth empowerment
  • Educational quizzes
