Number of volunteer instructors:11
Average number of students: 55
Number of workshops held: 3 times a week for three hours
Type of classes held: Intro to Math, English, German, Physics, Chemistry, Agro & Eco math and extracurricular activities like a handicrafts, robotics and programing, jewlery making.
Program Summary:
During this reporting period, the instructions were geared towards helping student prepare for the end of the year exams while also providing some fun extracurricular activities to balance the stressful period. The attendance was higher than usual as expected due to exams so this posted a bit of a problem managing all students; however, the results were very good based on students grades.
Instructive lessons
In the month of October the youth from the Zenica orphanage have actively participated in lessons that were held 3 times a week from the following subjects: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Statistics, English, German. The lessons were held in the afternoon period when they were done with school. The largest demand was for lessons in Mathematics, Physics, English and German languages. By far the biggest issue for most students was Mathematics, where we had over 40 students from elementary school attending.
Our biggest success is a high school student by the name of Sedin who is in the 4th grade. He had issues with: functions, integrals, diferencial equations, combinatorics. While he made a great effort in overcoming the problems it was evident that he struggled with the subject. His breakthrough occurred after 3 months of studying and revisiting the subject matter. The student was tutored by a math teacher and 3 volunteer students. Sedin was commended by his math teacher and was very grateful of the help he had received, so to repay his gratitude he volunteered to help other kids at the orphanage by tutoring those that go to elementary school in math. Out of the 15 students that attend high school 13 attended the lessons and were keen to learn as well as respectful and hard working. Out of the 53 students that attended lessons all of them finished this semester with a passing grade, often getting good grades in the subjects they attended. We would also like to single out another student by the name of Besim who attends the 9th grade of elementary school. He had major issues with physics, were he had a failing grade, which he corrected to a 4 (B). We are aware of his issues of intentionaly skipping school and not attending classes, which we helped correct with the After School program. The students that attend the After School Program are extremely pleased with it and very grateful.
Workshops (Programing, Robotics, Creative and Music)
In the months of October, November and December most of our workshops were held during weekends but due to an increased demand and interest we introduced another time to hold them during the work week in the afternoon. The best response was received by the programing and robotics workshops, were the students attending were very excited and enthusiastic. The younger students (elementary school 1st-9th grade) were taught trough robots designed for kids to learn and embrace programing. The older students (high school) were taught various programing languages like C++, HTML, CSS, Python, etc. The workshops were attended by a total of 55 students. There is the added fact that there are 5 young people that live at the orphanage that have finished high school but do not have a job, that we are working on educating in programing to help them make a living. They have received good education from the After School Program, and trough some tests we have determined that they have truly learnt from the program as well as researched for themselves. There was a large interest in programing and robotics in girls, where the ones in elementary school went to robotics while the older ones went to programing workshops. They have learnt to assemble the robots as well as program them, use code blocks, make the sensors follow a line on the ground, etc.
Apart from workshops in robotics and programing there have been workshops in more creative and artistic subjects such as: decoupage, jewelry making, etc. Most of the interest in this was shown by the older girls, 3 of which have finished high school and were unemployed so these workshops came in handy for them to learn how to make and sell things like jewelry and decoupage. Their names are Imra, Kanita, Dijana.
Parties, Gatherings and Holiday Shows
With the After School Program we tried making it very rich, and that apart from the lessons and workshops we also have free time and time to socialise. We organized 4 visits to public institutions such as the city library, theathre, ER and the police station. Our goal was to introduce our Afterschool program participants to these institutions and how they worked.
We marked the 25th of November (a state holiday) at the orphanage where we organized a gathering with candy and cake where the kids recited poems about Bosnia and Herzegovina. After that we had some food and enjoyed some fun time while singing and hanging out. At the end of december we organized a traditional New Year's celebration where we had karaoke as well as a little competition in programming robots. The kids and youth were excited and grateful for the party and wanted us to stay there longer. They all expressed their gratitude for the After School program.

Plans for the next quarter:
The plans for the next 3 months is to continue working with our Afterschool program participants by providing lessons and workshops as well as giving them new experiences that will be fulfiling and educational, and help them for their future life. During their winter break we plan to increase the frequency of the workshops that pertain to programing and robotics as well as the creative workshops. We also plan to help those that have finished school and dont have a job by teaching them programing as their future career. We also plan to do workshops on start-ups and business development to help them further by making them more entrepreneurial. We also plan to hold workshops for self sustainability, giving the vital knowledge for after their life at the home.
