Program Summary:

During this reporting period, the instructions were directed to help students learn things that they needed help with to improve their grades. The great interest among our students at the "After School" program and the intensity that they show for programming, robotics and creative workshops shows that we are on the pulse what matters to the students.

Instructive lessons

During the months of April, May and June the beneficiaries regularly attended instructive teaching, eduactional – creative workshops and programin and robotics workshops. In the month of April there was a great amount of interest for the instructions in mathematics, physics and computer sciences. Pupils from grades 4 through 9 mostly attended instructions in mathematics. Pero is a pupil in the 9th grade who had difficulties with mathematics. He wasn't able to learn the basic lessons but was about to finish elementary school, and with the bad grades in mathematics it would have been difficult for him to enroll in the high school that he wanted. So we ended up doing instructive teaching with him four times a week and each lesson lasted three hours. He attended regularly and in a short time the improvement were visible. After about a month he started improving his grades and even got praises by his teacher for his work. That day he came into lessons greatful about proud for improving his grades. The instructors were very happy about this as they knew that he had been working hard. He continued improving as the months passed and corrected his grade from an F to a B.

We also helped Pero prepare for the admission exam for the high school he wanted to attend, which he passed with ease. It was a great achievement for us all but also for Pero who put in a lot of effort. In the After School program, within the last 3 months there were 65 beneficiaries that attended the program. Most of the pupils that atended our lessons were from the 9th grade. The pupils that atended high school had the most problems in mathematics, physics, chemistry, english and german.

Workshops in programing and robotics, creative workshops and music workshops

During the before mentioned months besides lessons in the After School program there was a large interest in additional workshops. These included programing, robotics, creative workshops, drawing, painting, painting on foil and making jewelry. The programing and robotics workshops was attended by 65 children. In the period we worked with children we noticed great results in the fields of programing and robotics. Twenty attendees successfuly completed courses in HTML and CSS, and Java scrypt. They had the oppurtunity to get to know each other and learn how to make a 3D object and print it on a 3D printer. We used Fusion360, a very complex and advanced program.

The advantage of the program is that it allows the testing of a concept or product within the program ie simulating loads, testing the strength of materials and the model. This workshop was attended by 30 beneficiaries. There was a workshop in C++ which was attended by 22 beneficiaries and all of them passed it. Besides showing interest in STEM workshops there was a lot of interest shown in the art workshops, some of which were drawing, drawing on foil decoupage etc. Workshops were held twice a week in the afternoon hours. The beneficiaries were thankful that the After School program gave them a chance to learn and show their skills and apply the knowledge they gained. A few of the girls that had finished high school have taken the knowledge gained in the workshops to earn some money by creating 3d models. During the month of June we had organized workshops in bussines planing, and workshop relating to starting bussineses with the goal of supporting and helping children and youth to start their own bussinesses.

Parties, Gatherings and Holiday Shows

In the After School program we tried to have a diverse curriculum but besides the workshops and instructive lessons to have time for fun and socializing. In May during the month of Ramadan we organized an iftar for the children and instructors. The children and youth said that they were very happy with the iftar and that they enjoyed spending time with the instructors as well as each other. In order to promote love and understanding of other religions and other people we organized a tour of the religous buildings in the city of Zenica. We went to Sultan Ahmed Mosque, the Sinagouge, the Orthodox Church and the Catholic Church. The children and youth were fascinated and say that the experience introduced them to religous buildings that they formerly didnt know much about but were aware of them. We also held educational workshops on healthy lifestyles. One of the workshops was on the theme of the harm of shisha with the slogan „I chose health not shisha“. The workshop had signifacnt interest and there was interaction with the children and youth. By alking to them we realized that we were able to get through to them about the dangerous of shisha.

Plans for the upcoming quarter

Plans for July August and September are to continue working with our beneficiaries and to guide them during the summer holidays to learn as much as possible trough practical work so that they could atain knowledge through the workshops and in the future become an entrepreneur. In september we plan to increase the amount of lessons held as the school year begins. We also wish to help young people that finish high school and are unemployed to find jobs and qualify to programing and robotics. Its our goal to make them socialy active and hard working members of society.

Achievements in these months:

  • Leisure that is used productively through creative and IT workshops
  • Children and young people showed great interest and talent
  • Children's desire to learn and achieve better results in school
  • A primary school pupil successfully passes the entrance examination for enrolment in high school
