After School Program Report

July – September 2017

Number of volunteer instructors:19

Average number of students:56

Number of workshops held:4 times a week for five hours

Type of classes held:Intro to Math, English, German, Bosnian, physics, chemistry, Agro & Eco math and extracarricular activities like handicrafts and information tehnology

Program Summary:

During this reporting period, the instructions were geared towards helping student prepare for the end of the school year exams while also providing some fun extracurricular activities to balance the stressful period. The attendance was higher than usual as expected due to exams so this posted a bit of a problem managing all students; however, the results were very good based on students grades.

Instructive lessons

During the summer break; the beneficiaries of the program at the orphanage were thoroughly satisfied with the activities we implemented for them during the break because they included fun and educational activities. In August we were already preparing the children for September, we were especially focusing on the ones who were studying for college exams. One of the afterschool program students who is still living at the orphanage and attends our classes came to receive help to pass three of his exams over the summer. He is a clear motivation and inspiration to many of the young children at the orphanage as he did not miss any of the classes during the summer break and in September he passed all three exams with high grades.

At the beginning of September when the new school year began, about 56 beneficiaries entered into the after school class – 30 elementary and 26 high school students. Their biggest problems were mathematics, the English and German Language, chemistry, physics and IT programming. We held after school classes three times a week for two hours each time. In the third week of September we saw the first results when the first exams started. One of the best high school students who is currently a third-year student of the technical high school, department of electrical technicians, and a very diligent and responsible student, but he had problems in his math class. From the beginning of September, we have been studying mathematics with him for one and a half hours every working day. He showed improvements during this month, but there is still a lot to be done to improve his mathematical skills.

IT education and Creative workshops

During this reporting quarter, we had workshops in robotics and programming twice a week. To our great satisfaction, the robotics and programming workshop had 18 female participants which made their first steps in programming and its basics. The girls enjoyed the robotics and programming workshop. We are especially excited to be able to report that few of the girls were able to complete their task and make their first Android application. We managed to interest the girls in robotics and programming and we have been receiving many more applications for IT workshops from girls from the orphanage. This is a huge improvement and a testament to our program because few years’ back and even last year, we were not able to get any girls interested in IT. This makes us especially proud. We plan to make a website where the girls will be able to advertise their work on that website to encourage them to keep learning and advancing.

Since July we have also started with the Competency Passport consulting. The Competency Passport is a tool used to identify and define non-formal acquired knowledge, skills and competencies. For everything we learn in school or courses or seminaries we have diplomas and certificates which document and evaluate the learned material. This way we have attempted to include and motivate 10 children and young people which have after the two-month-process made their own Competency Passports.

Parties, Meet-ups and Performances for Holidays

Apart from after school classes and educational-creative workshops we also made it possible for the beneficiaries to have some fill good fun. In July, we visited the home for the elderly where the beneficiaries had creative fun time with the elderly where they could show their acquired skills from the After-School Project.

Apart from the visit to the home for the elderly, we also made a visit to the city of Mostar, Stolac and Buna in Hercegovina. We took the most engaged and diligent beneficiaries with us to participate in some after school classes and creative workshops. The travel to Mostar was marked by a great atmosphere. Some have never been to Hercegovina and this was an ideal opportunity. A number of beneficiaries stated that this project and its activities made their lives more rich and easier and if it weren't for it, they would have many difficulties in life.

Achievements this quarter:

  • Children removed from the streets
  • High interest among beneficiaries to regularly do homework, study and learn
  • One high school student who attended our program is now a college student
  • Free time used productively through creative workshops
  • Talents were exposed in workshops
  • Girls showed great interest towards IT course
  • Children are now apt to perform hands-on work skills they acquired in the workshops

Plans for the next quarter:

  • Instructional lessons, following the success of the beneficiaries in school
  • Foreign language learning courses
  • Children acquiring the skills to be self-sufficient
  • Educational and skill strengthening courses
  • Creative workshops, quizzes
