Give 220 Disadvantaged Children a Brighter Future

With the support of kind donors from all over the world, we continue to teach English classes to over 700 less-privileged students in Phuket, Thailand. We also provide a wide range of extracurricular activities for 250 disadvantaged children who live at school during term time due to their family circumstances. Our teachers consider this a key element of our work, as by engaging in activities outside the classroom, children develop crucial social skills, self-confidence, and self-esteem contributing to their personal growth.

Our learning has stretched beyond the classroom in many varied ways. With a compass in hand, we embarked on a quest to discover the directions of various areas within our school. It was a hands-on adventure as students navigated and unlocked the mysteries of North, South, East, and West. We continued to encourage the children’s artistic talents with Lego competitions and jewelry-making; the concentration and imagination every student shows is inspiring. Cooking classes are still a huge favourite, the children learning to work in small groups, sharing the chopping and mixing. Of course, the most exciting part is tasting the finished product! Students from the United World College Thailand continue to come to school to run fun birthday parties filled with dance, arts and crafts and sports.

Leaving the school grounds, this term we have had three excursions to the Hyatt Regency Marine Biological Center. The students learned about the importance of mangroves to our local environment, the dangers of plastic to marine life and saw firsthand the relationship of the clown fish with their anemones. They were also amazed by a hands-on experience examining sea stars and slugs!

Our teachers and volunteers can only continue these projects with the support of our kind donors. THANK YOU for enabling us to provide these opportunities for the disadvantaged children at Kamala School. You can’t imagine how much these experiences mean to the children. This holiday season, the children discovered the joy of decorating their Christmas Tree and are looking forward to their very own Christmas Party. The Thai school year is speeding by! Phuket Has Been Good To Us (PHBGTU) teachers continue to support over 350 disadvantaged children aged 7 to 12 at Kamala School by teaching their English, Mathematics & Science in English classes and running an after-school Coconut Club.

Coconut Club, open to the 250 children who live at Kamala School due to family circumstances, remains as popular as ever, especially with the younger ones. When new children arrive to live at school, especially those as young as 5 and 6, the club plays a hugely important role in gently integrating them into school life. This term an old pre-COVID favourite - cooking, was reintroduced to the club for our Little Master Chefs! They made simple dishes such as pancakes, egg sandwiches and got artistic with muffin decorating. The children also continued to enjoy number BINGO, outdoor sports and arts and crafts. The club is run by PHBGTU teachers and volunteers, and the children have fun whilst learning new English vocabulary and building their self-confidence and self-esteem.

Across all the primary year classes, our teachers use multimodal learning; integrating song and dance into teaching, as when students access more than one sensory system, they learn the materials more thoroughly. And it's fun! The children sing and dance in early years, and in upper primary classes, a ukulele and a guitar are brought into play. It’s heartwarming to see our teachers inspire in the children a love of learning. We are coming up to half-term exams in September, and their PHBGTU teachers are looking forward to seeing all the students’ hard work pay off.
