Cosma is a social enterprise aimed at fostering economic development of farming house holds in Uganda. We organize farmers into village cooperatives through which over~80% of our budget provides revolving credit, farm inputs and other post harvest services to smallholder farmers. This helps farmers achieve higher production amidst climate change while enabling smallholder farmers earn high sale price from their grain and coffee produce in Uganda.
The rural areas surrounding Kampala are primarily agricultural; with about 70% of residents engaged in subsistence farming to meet their needs. The effects of climate change on COVID-19 on coffee production and supply chains has dramatically affected rural farmers. These farmers do not have access to grain insurance, stable grain sales pipelines and capital for improvements in irrigation and are at risk of over-spending valuable time and energy without being able to support their families
Establishing village cooperatives with stable incomes is critical to revitalizing the economy in these rural areas. The effects of COVID have drained hard earned capital from cooperatives and the individuals that rely on them. Providing the supplies and support these businesses need is key to their ability to achieve independence and ensure food security for the people who rely on them.
Cosma's goal is to create economic independence. To achieve this, a sustainable approach is necessary. Cosma teaches all the financial and agricultural skills to grow a small business, and provides the financial support necessary to do so. Your contributions help support over 100 villages cooperatives, providing the stimulus they need to improve their standard of living.
