Challenge

For more than a decade, war, violence, and terrorism have persisted in northeast Syria causing millions of people to become displaced, kidnapped, and killed. Many civilians are in urgent need of immediate relief, alongside trauma therapy and mental health interventions. Today there is a large stigma associated with mental health treatment, which often prevents people in need from seeking out support.

Solution

In 2018, Jiyan Foundation opened its first treatment center in Qamishili, northeast Syria to provide essential mental health and medical services to low-income survivors of war and violence. Our office also provides tangible relief to those in need. Jiyan Foundation's treatment center in Syria is operated by local staff, who work to reduce stigma toward mental health treatment and provide necessary interventions.

Long-Term Impact

Jiyan Foundation's work directly contributes to the long-term stability of the region. Reducing stigma allows for more people to receive the treatment they need creating safer local environments and reducing human suffering. Our local doctors, psychologists, and physiotherapists work together to develop a long-term treatment plan for the optimal rehabilitation of our patients. In addition, we provide tangible relief during times of crisis such as food, dry goods, and other necessities.
