Syria Internally Displaced Persons and Refugee Report
February 2020
Your donations are helping us provide the much-needed essentials to people and families this winter. As part of our campaign, this report seeks to update donors on the current situation in north-east Syria where we are working to provide support.
IDP and Refugee Statistics
As reported by UNFPA and expressed by Under Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Mark Lowcock, since last October 70,000 people have remained internally displaced and an additional 90,000 people are currently living in IDP camps.
There are 77 shelters in the Al-Hassakeh Governorate, the area of north-east Syria. Displaced people have found shelter in informal settlements and shelters in the region. In the last few weeks three informal displacement shelters have been established in the region. The largest Twenieh, houses 4,120 people and the smallest Tal Samen, houses 20 people at the time of this report.
These harsh winter months are especially dangerous to elderly and sick individuals whom often lack enough warm clothes and food.
War in Syria
There remains no end in sight for the war in Syria. Aerial bombardment and violence continue to cause civilian casualties and displace families. As violence continues to affect the country many families are forced to flee from places they thought safe, and so civilians are constantly on the move.
How Aid Reaches People in Need
A large majority of humanitarian relief arrives through cross-border crossings between Iraq and Syria. The Jiyan Foundation continues to support humanitarian aide workers by providing much needed supplies.
Stay Informed and Spread the Word
