Report on the "5000 Packages for Ukraine" Project - part II

By Artur Jurkowski | Director of Communication at Krakow Food Bank

Project Overview:
The "5000 Packages for Ukraine" project was launched in response to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Ukraine caused by the Russian Federation's aggressive actions. Millions of people, both within Ukraine and those who have sought refuge in neighboring countries such as Poland, continue to face dire circumstances. Our initiative aims to alleviate the suffering of those affected by delivering essential food aid to vulnerable populations.

Project Implementation:
Since the onset of the conflict in 2022, our organization has remained steadfast in its mission to provide humanitarian relief. Through well-established partnerships with Polish and Ukrainian NGOs, we have ensured that food packages reach those in critical need, including individuals living in war-torn regions where active military operations persist. These trusted partners on the ground have played a crucial role in the safe and efficient distribution of aid, despite the immense challenges posed by the ongoing conflict.

Progress and Impact So Far:
The project is still ongoing, and to date, we have successfully delivered 1,580 food packages to Ukrainian civilians in Ukraine. The impact of this effort has been significant:

  • Direct Support: Thousands of individuals and families have received much-needed sustenance, improving their immediate well-being.

  • Enhanced NGO Capacity: Strengthening our network of local and international NGOs has increased the efficiency of humanitarian aid distribution.

  • Solidarity and Resilience: Beyond providing food, this initiative fosters a sense of unity and hope, reinforcing the importance of global humanitarian responsibility.

Since November 2024, thanks to the support of donors and GlobalGiving, we have been able to deliver an additional 7,008 kg of food to those in need in Ukraine: 580 packages were prepared in our warehouse by our dedicated volunteers from HCLTech-Poland. The direct deliveries were carried out by nine partner organizations, ensuring that aid reached vulnerable populations in areas such as Odessa, Kherson, Kharkiv, Zhytomyr, and Bucha.

One of our partners, Slavic Mission, reported: "People with tears in their eyes thanked us for the help and for remembering them and their deceased parents and children. We would like to convey gratitude from the administration of the village council, local governments, and families of fallen soldiers."

The aid does not stop here—we are actively working towards reaching our goal of 5,000 food packages, with further deliveries planned in the coming months.

Challenges Encountered:
Despite our progress, the project has faced logistical challenges, including transportation difficulties, supply chain disruptions, and security risks in conflict-affected areas. However, through strong cooperation with our partners and the unwavering support of donors, we continue to overcome these obstacles to ensure the aid reaches those in need.

Long-Term Impact and Sustainability:
The "5000 Packages for Ukraine" initiative is contributing to the long-term stabilization of vulnerable communities. Our efforts have:

  • Strengthened Local NGOs: By supporting organizations on the ground, we have enhanced their capacity to respond to future crises.

  • Facilitated Recovery and Rebuilding: Providing consistent aid is laying the groundwork for long-term recovery efforts in Ukraine.

  • Promoted Global Responsibility: The continued support of international donors underscores a collective commitment to humanitarian relief and human dignity.

Since February 2022, the Food Bank in Kraków has continuously supported war victims in Ukraine and Ukrainian refugees in Poland by providing essential food aid. To date, we have delivered a total of 852,982.3 kg of food and other donations, valued at over $2,842,105, equating to more than 2 million meals.

Gratitude to Our Donors:
This project would not be possible without the generous support of GlobalGiving donors. Your contributions have directly translated into life-saving assistance for those impacted by the war in Ukraine. We extend our deepest gratitude for your commitment to this cause.

Looking Ahead:
As the project continues, we remain dedicated to reaching our goal of 5,000 food packages and beyond. The need for humanitarian aid in Ukraine remains critical, and we invite you to stay engaged with our initiatives to help us make a lasting difference.

Thank you for your support and solidarity.
