5000 Packages for Ukraine" - Report Part VI - The Crisis Is Also Growing in Poland

By Artur Jurkowski | Project Leader

Four Years Later, the Humanitarian Crisis Continues

More than four years have passed since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine began. For millions of people, the emergency has not ended—it has simply become everyday life.

Behind every food package stands a person who has lost a home, a loved one, or the certainty of tomorrow. Elderly people living alone, mothers raising children without support, people with disabilities, and families displaced multiple times continue to rely on humanitarian assistance just to meet their basic needs.

The "5000 Packages for Ukraine" project was created to ensure that, even after years of war, these people know they have not been forgotten.

Delivering Food Where It Is Needed Most

Since the launch of this initiative in July 2024, the Krakow Food Bank, together with its trusted partner organizations, has delivered 266,985 kg of food assistance with a total value of USD 900,949.

This volume of aid is equivalent to more than 26,000 food packages weighing approximately 10 kilograms each, providing essential support to thousands of vulnerable families.

Current reporting period (February–March 2026)

  • Poland: 28,495 kg of food assistance valued at USD 89,947
  • Ukraine: 1,271 kg of food assistance valued at USD 650

Total delivered during this reporting period:

29,766 kg of food worth USD 90,597

Our assistance reached people through a network of committed local organizations, including:

  • HOPE Harmony Foundation
  • Misja Sowianska w Europie
  • Church of Jesus Christ Pentecostal Congregation (Kraków)
  • Church of God "Grace of Christ" (Kraków)

Together, we continue to ensure that humanitarian aid reaches those who need it most.

The Crisis Is Also Growing in Poland

Beginning in March 2026, changes to the Polish government's support system for Ukrainian refugees significantly reduced access to public assistance.

While many working-age refugees have managed to become independent, the new regulations have disproportionately affected those least able to cope on their own: older adults, people with chronic illnesses or disabilities, and mothers raising several children.

For many of them, the difficult choice is no longer between comfort and sacrifice—it is between buying food, purchasing medicine, or paying rent.

Kraków still hosts more than 50,000 Ukrainian refugees, many of whom continue rebuilding their lives while facing rising living costs and uncertain futures.

Recognizing this growing need, we have intensified our efforts to provide basic food assistance to the most vulnerable households.

More Than Food

Humanitarian assistance is often described in kilograms and statistics.

For the people receiving it, it means something much more.

It means a warm meal instead of going hungry.

It means medicine can be purchased because food has already been provided.

It means an elderly person does not have to choose between paying for heating or eating.

It means a mother can tell her children that tomorrow there will still be breakfast.

Food assistance restores a small sense of stability in lives shattered by war. It protects health, preserves dignity, and reminds people that solidarity still exists beyond borders.

Communities Standing Together

One of the most encouraging aspects of this project is the strength of local communities.

Our partner organizations distribute food packages directly to people in need, prepare hot meals, organize food points, and support displaced families every day. Volunteers sort donations, prepare parcels, and ensure that assistance reaches elderly people, homeless individuals, families with children, and internally displaced persons.

Together, this network transforms donor generosity into immediate, practical help.

Thank You for Making This Possible

Every food package delivered through this project carries more than food.

It carries compassion.

It tells someone who has lost almost everything that they are still seen, remembered, and supported.

To every GlobalGiving donor: thank you for standing with us through another chapter of this long humanitarian crisis. Your generosity allows us to respond quickly and effectively where the need is greatest.

Looking Ahead

Although more than four years have passed since the war escalated, humanitarian needs remain immense.

The Krakow Food Bank remains committed to reaching our goal of delivering 5,000 food packages and continuing to support both people living in Ukraine and refugees rebuilding their lives in Poland.

With your continued partnership, we can remain present where hope is most fragile.

Together, we are not only delivering food—we are preserving dignity, strengthening resilience, and feeding hope.
