Challenge

Of the eight Sub-Counties of Homa Bay County, Ndhiwa has the highest number of school dropouts at both the primary and high school levels. It also has the highest number of orphans caused by HIV/AIDS. The poor educational levels coupled with lack of industries has made life of most constituents very miserable, especially to orphans and vulnerable children. The girl-child is the most affected leading to teenage pregnancies and child marriages. The orphans usually do without breakfast and lunch.

Solution

The Project economically empowers 6000 women households' heads by training them on business startups and management of small scale businesses. This improves their incomes thus lifting them out of extreme poverty. They will be able to provide nutritious foodstuffs and therefore become food secure. Also by supporting educational requirements of these needy children, there will be improvements in school enrollment and completion rate at both primary and high school levels.

Long-Term Impact

Involving 6000 women households' heads in business activities will provide them with improved sustainable regular incomes. They will then be able to provide their children with education required for industry-focused skills training. The zero-rate school dropout will enable many orphans and vulnerable children to secure gainful employment thus reducing unemployment now devastating many families in the Project area. The net result will be remarkable economic development of the community.
