Hurricane Melissa struck Jamaica as one of the most powerful Atlantic storms in history-bringing 185 mph winds causing widespread destruction, destroying homes, damaging health facilities and cutting off roads. Americares is deploying an emergency response to the region to support in restoring health services, protecting vulnerable communities, and building resilience for the future.
The powerful storm caused widespread destruction, destroying homes, damaging health facilities and cutting off roads, limiting access to essential health services. In the immediate aftermath of the hurricane, more than half a million people were without power, about 30,000 people were displaced and 6,000 people were staying in shelters. The storm disrupted operations at health facilities across the island and forced hospitals to evacuate patients.
Americares response includes an emergency medical team providing free primary care services and mental health support to survivors. Services will include chronic disease management and treatment for urgent conditions, like infections and injuries. Americares is also funding repairs, cleaning supplies and equipment for damaged health facilities and working to provide clean water and hygiene products. Hospitals need everything from beds and scrubs to medicine, medical equipment and supplies.
As we deploy to Jamaica and support Haiti, we are committed to restoring health services, protecting vulnerable communities, and building resilience for the future. Our long-term recovery plans include rehabilitation of damaged health facilities, replenishment of essential medicines and supplies, and capacity-building for local health workers.
