This project will provide Uruguayan and international tourists entering the country in the three major tourist destinations the opportunity to commit to protecting children and adolescents against violence and promote healthy inter-generational interaction. The intervention promotes Uruguays association with the "Abuse-free Uruguay Movement" through the presence of adolescents that promote the movement.
We must ensure that all tourists in Uruguay can enjoy responsible tourism, recognizing the rights of children and adolescents and especially taking into account the ban on commercial sexual exploitation connected with tourism (stipulated in Uruguayan law N 17.815). Additionally, the "Abuse-free Uruguay Movement" is promoted by a kind, active, and warm community of adolescents and young people that promote a culture of healthy interactions.
Adolescents participate in a series of workshops and then carry-out the public intervention with tourists. They welcome tourists with a smile and offer them the "Passport for an Abuse-free Uruguay" and an informational brochure, providing information about commercial sexual exploitation. The teens present creative and colorful street performances in tourist entry points to promote interaction with tourists. TV and radio commercials are broadcast throughout the city, reinforcing the message.
Over 100 adolescents are trained to work with the tourist population. The message against sexual exploitation reaches over 50,000 tourists, who receiving passports, brochures, and posters: 10,000 tourists receive the passport directly from the teens, and at least 40,000 more come into contact with the movement though the dissemination in the media. More than 30 tourist organizations and businesses (hotels, bus stations, airports, etc.) commit to promote healthy interactions and prevent violence.
