Getting to know the animals at the zoo
Getting to know the animals at the zoo

Dear Valued Supporters,

The new school year is in full swing, and we’re thrilled to share that the Animal Assisted Therapy Program at the Jerusalem Biblical Zoo is off to a fantastic start!

This groundbreaking program, one of the zoo’s most impactful educational initiatives, has been transforming lives since its modest beginnings in 1998 with just four experimental groups. Today, it has grown into an essential resource for special education frameworks across Jerusalem, offering students access to innovative therapeutic techniques in a setting that fosters joy, learning, and connection.

For many families of children with special needs, frequent zoo visits are financially out of reach. That’s why this program is so vital—not only does it provide a meaningful and engaging experience for participants, but it also promotes inclusion and changes societal perceptions of individuals with special needs. By demonstrating acceptance and integration, we’re helping to shape a more compassionate and understanding community.

While our primary focus is children in special education, we also serve adult groups with disabilities—welcoming participants from all of Jerusalem’s diverse communities, including Jews, Christians, and Muslims, both religious and secular.

A Journey of Connection and Discovery

At the start of the program, participants are introduced to a variety of small, friendly animals in our “Animal House” classrooms, where they can build trust and confidence. As they progress, they interact with the domestic animals at the petting zoo, including goats, rabbits, and sheep. Depending on their age, needs, and comfort level, some groups even get to experience supervised encounters with larger animals like giraffes and elephants—awe-inspiring moments that create lasting memories.

Throughout the therapeutic process, the Animal House serves as our central space for fostering emotional connections, as these small animals provide a sense of security and companionship. But one of the biggest advantages of hosting this program at the zoo is the endless opportunities for unique interactions that go far beyond a typical petting zoo. Participants can engage with exotic reptiles, birds, and mammals, make special treats for the bears (such as summer “popsicles” made from applesauce), and explore behind-the-scenes areas not open to the public.

Hands-on experiences with professional zookeepers and exotic animals—such as lemurs—make each visit an adventure. Interacting with larger animals, like rhinos, often boosts self-confidence, while activities like hand-feeding koi fish or engaging in water-based experiences have a calming effect.

Committed to Making a Difference

Our dedicated team remains passionate about providing the highest level of therapy and support to our participants. We can’t wait to share more updates with you as the year unfolds!

Thank you for being part of this journey with us. Your support makes all of this possible.

Warmest regards,
The Animal Assisted Therapy Team at the Jerusalem Biblical Zoo
