Project Report | Mar 21, 2024
Fundraising support appreciated

By Sophie Pyper | Program Manager

We once again would like to start by thanking our generous donors and supporters for helping us to raise funds that go towards our conservation projects here in Limpopo. We have many ongoing projects such as improving and increasing our wildlife monitoring equipment, assisting the reserve’s Anti-Poaching Unit (APU) with essential supplies and equipment, and supporting projects in our local community that work towards educating and re-connecting local learners with wildlife and the natural environment.  By utilising donor funds for these projects, we hope to have and maintain a more positive and sustainable impact in our area.

Since our last report, we once again held our annual Pub Quiz fundraiser for the 5th year running at Mahlahla Game Lodge. Alongside the quiz we ran a prize raffle on the night with some incredibly generous prizes donated by some of our local organisations. The event on the night raised R11,200 and our online GlobalGiving campaign raised an incredible  total of R24,860 ($1,332). Thank you to everyone who kindly donated to this fundraiser. All funds raised from this event and the online fundraiser were put towards the instalment of a hi-tech security camera system on the reserve boundary to increase the security of the reserve. With increases in poaching activity in the area the installation of this camera is vital, not just to the reserve we operate on but to the safety of all the reserves in the surrounding area.  Additional funds from the event have continued to fund our community engagement project with one of our partner organisations Koru Camp, who take learners from the local schools on an environmental education experience in the heart of the Greater Kruger. Each camp allows for 10 students and 2 teachers to join and costs ZAR3200 (roughly $170) for a 3-day camping experience. Thanks to these funds raised, we were able to send 10 learners in November, wrapping up our 2023 objective of giving 40 learners this incredible opportunity.

In February 2024 we launched a community environmental education focused GlobalGiving campaign with a target of $2600 which would fund 4 Koru Camps throughout the 2024. We held an on base fundraiser alongside this campaign where our participants and staff completed a 24hr bike challenge. So far we have raised $655 which was used to fund a camp of 10 learners at the beginning of March. The group experienced the roar of a lion for the first time, giving the grade 7 students an experience to remember!

Our charity t-shirts, caps and hoodies continue to sell well. We have recently put in a new order of our Rhino hoodies ready for the colder winter weather. All profits from the t-shirts, hoodies and caps support our projects.

Finally, we would like to take this opportunity to highlight that none of this could be possible without the support of both our participants and partners in the field, as well as our alumni, friends, family, and partners all around the world.

Thank you so much for your continued support and engagement in the projects that we here in the field are so passionate about.

Love,

The GVI Limpopo Team
