How Not Guilty is Tackling Sexual Abuse in Middle East

By Dr. Laila Risgallah Wahba | Founder, Not Guilty

Your generosity has made it possible for us to achieve remarkable progress, and we are honored to share with you the impact of these initiatives.

One of the top challenges facing Not Guilty is this: Sexual abuse has never been tackeled in a structured and focused manner due to the culture of shame towards the subject in the Middle East. Through this report, we aim to demonstrate how Not Guilty is working to combat this crisis by addressing critical gaps.

Facing the Current Landscape

The current landscape of efforts to address sexual abuse in the Middle East includes a mix of nonprofits, government initiatives, and educational organizations. While these efforts are important, many lack the depth, cultural sensitivity, and hands-on engagement needed to create lasting change. Children, parents, and teachers are not given any information about sexual abuse, such as how to detect it and how to deal with it. It is estimated that thirty percent of sexually abused children perpetuate the cycle of violence creating an intensified abuse spiral.

In order to tackle these critical issues, we provide customized, interactive workshops that are carefully tailored to diverse cultural contexts. Our specially trained facilitators approach these sensitive topics with care, ensuring that participants not only receive vital information but also feel supported, understood, and empowered to take action. All courses and educational seminars offered by the staff and volunteers of Not Guilty are available for children, teens, adults and employees as well as teachers and other professionals who interface regularly with these high risk populations.

Impact and Outcome

Our targeted trainings aim to decrease sexual abuse and bullying by creating safer schools and neighborhoods, while also strengthening reporting and support for victims. At Not Guilty, our ultimate goal is to empower individuals with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to actively prevent and respond to sexual abuse, who will then become committed to creating abuse-free communities.

Abolishing sexual abuse and bullying and the trauma that comes with it can never be accomplished by one person or one organization. We need all of you. Let us join our hands. Only then can we abolish sexual abuse, trauma, and bullying, raising our beloved Egypt to indeed become the greatest nation on earth.

We are better together.
