From the Greenhouse to the Kitchen

Transplant the seedlings to the seed beds.

In Amún Shéa students dedicate part of their class schedule to greenhouse cultivation as part of the institutional methodology, with the aim of acquiring practical knowledge of the applied sciences to crops and mathematics at the time of marketing the products that are grown in The GreenHouse.

The interesting thing happens when students consume the food prepared in the kitchen for lunch or snack time and in this way they are aware of the importance of growing food, generating in them a friendly spirit with the environment and at the same time promoting a healthy diet and nutritious.

Arlet, 10 years old (fourth grade) "I like to go to the greenhouse because my grandmother has many crops in my house and I want to learn to help her and I would like to teach her how to plant plants that are used to feed. I am very interested in learning because we are losing part of our nature because of the damage we cause with pollution and I want to learn a lot so as not to damage the environment. When I eat the food that we grow, I feel good because I know that I am cultivating my health and I am nourishing myself healthy, in this way I not only help the earth but also me and my companions ".

Healthy eating will always be fundamental for the development of children and adolescents creating healthy and balanced eating habits, thus avoiding the consumption of junk food. By being involved in the cultivation process, students are familiar with the food they eat and at the same time know the nutritional properties of the food they eat, information they receive while visiting the greenhouses.

Erick, 10 years old (fourth grade) "I like to go to the greenhouse because you work on the land and I like to know how the land and plants are produced. When we grow we must wait for the fruit to be ready to take it to the kitchen and eat it. I do not like vegetables but I have learned that I must eat them because they are necessary for health because they have lots of proteins and vitamins so that I can be strong, healthy and not get sick".

The moment in which students become protagonists is where education makes sense, each child is able to understand the importance of developing life skills and in them to find meaning in what they receive at school. The child understands that science can go beyond an experiment in the laboratory and get involved in the process of food production.

There are many educational alternatives, but no recipe for each educational environment and rural education are born alternative development through the production of different types of crops, as well as opening spaces for students to find opportunities to obtain resources in their families and products for food at home through the orchards made with their family.

Abigail, 9 years old (third grade) "In my house I help my father to plant, because he is dedicated to that, we have planted corn, when we sow tomato and chile the whitefly always arrived and ruined the crop, but I learned here ( referring to the Amún Shéa school), in a greenhouse class they taught me that we can put a yellow bag because that attracts the whitefly and then we fill the bag with oil, we put it where we had the crops, we did this with my dad and we could exterminate with the whitefly and that helped my dad a lot. "

In this way, children take ownership of knowledge and transfer them to their home, making them active in different environments, committed to constant learning and taking advantage of opportunities to develop and apply the knowledge acquired in the different learning spaces. Teachers, students and parents are aware of the importance of making the most of the abilities and skills of students in this area, in search of a balanced and healthy diet. The food will follow its course daily, from the greenhouse to the kitchen and we can say from the garden to the kitchen of the house of each boy and girl who daily learns the importance of growing the food that they will later have on their table.

Your support contributes so that the students acquire theoretical and practical knowledge and that these allow them to open development opportunities in Morazán.
