Summary

Arbat Brighter Future offers the opportunity for a university education to young deserving syrians living in the Arbat refugee camp. This camp is located in Iraqi Kurdistan, 30km from Sulaimanyah, sheltering 10 000 refugees ( over half are under 18 years old ) who fled the horrors of the war in Syria. The project aims to finance full scholarships for a higher education at the American University of Iraq in Sulaimanyah for at least three new students every year for the next 12 years.

Challenge

For the two thousand teenagers living in Arbat camp , the lack of options leave them with little prospects after high school graduation and a bleak outlook for the future. Many are suffering from depression and deep anxiety. Therefore commitment to their studies is very low. Many boys drop out of school in order to help support their families with whatever job they may find and girls mary very young. For many others , an uncertain and risky emigration appears as the sole option.

Solution

Arabat Brighter Future provides a full scholarship including housing for the six years needed to obtain an undergraduate degree. Higher education at AUIS ( American University of Iraq at Sulaimanyah) provides graduates with an internationnaly recognized degree. The opportunity to attend college gives highschoolers a better appreciation for education The number of kids from the camp in school and graduating is already growing. Test scores are also noticeably higher

Long-Term Impact

Opportunity for a university education instantly gives hope to the thousands children in the camp , inspiring commitment to their studies and increasing the level of their motivation, thus contributing to raising the overall level of education among teenagers in the camp. Highly educated syrians with professional skills will better support their families and contribute to rebuilding their country.
