This South Florida based project will administer stipends for transgender women of color and immigrant experience, many of whom are living with HIV and who are disproportionately affected by unemployment, homelessness and discrimination. It will also provide assistance to guide clients through the name change process.These stipends are designed to help with every day needs such as paying for groceries, phone bills and utilities, gas and transportation and range in amount from $25 to $200.
Transgender women of color are amongst some of the most vulnerable in our community, experiencing disproportionate rates of unemployment, homelessness and discrimination. They are also affected by HIV at alarming rates in South Florida with studies suggesting rates of HIV as high as 44% amongst blacks trans women and 23% amongst trans Latinx women. The Covid-19 pandemic has only served to exacerbate the issues facing South Florida's transgender and gender non conforming community.
This project is designed to provide relief to members fo South Florida's transgender and gender non conforming community by offering financial assistance with everything from paying for groceries, purchasing monthly bus passes, paying utility bills and contributing towards rent. It also provides funds to help clients complete the name and gender marker change process so that their ID and official documents reflect their gender identity.
At the moment many of our clients are in need of immediate assistance. These small amounts can be the difference between someone eating or not eating, not being able to get to their place of employment or having their phone cut off. This assistance is designed to help clients address these short term challenges while our ongoing case management services are designed to address longer term challenges for clients and ensure other needs such as medical care are addressed.
