Summary

This project will support an integrated, modern and holistic art program at 2 government schools in Karachi, Pakistan, serving 3200 girls from low-income neighborhoods of Pakistan's biggest city. The schools teach art as a weekly subject, introducing a variety of basic and advanced techniques, different mediums, international and local art history, current local artists. The program also lets student experience and showcase art through public murals, visits to galleries and annual student shows.

Challenge

Most government schools suffer from low enrolment, high absenteeism, poor student learning outcomes and lack of exposure to extra-curricular programs. The vast majority of government schools do not allow students any outlet for creative expression, and lack a formal art curriculum, facilities/studio space and trained teachers who can provide creative education.

Solution

This project provides weekly art classes to 3200 girls at 2 government schools managed by Zindagi Trust, covering various techniques, mediums (including drawing, painting & pottery) and art history. Students also visit art galleries, museums and parks, participate in specialized workshops and guest speaker sessions. This integrated program has motivated our students to be more regular, take interest in other subjects, express themselves and apply what they learn in class to the outside world.

Long-Term Impact

The art program at these two government schools has already helped improve student attendance, student learning outcomes and promote an interest in a career in the arts. The schools are considered model schools by the government and we work closely on policy advocacy with them: our goal is that an integrated arts program is eventually adopted and supported by the government in all its schoolshence making an impact on thousands of students' lives in addition to the 3200 students in these schools.
