The start of the new year bought new creativity and inspiration in the lives of our students and our curriculum. Zindagi Trust believes in a holistic education model that allows students to nourish themselves from all aspects. Art encourages the creative side of our students and allows them to view it as a socially acceptable and exciting endeavour.
Our students have been taking part in projects, competitions and impressing us all with their work. In February, students from grade 7th, 8th and 9th took part in an Art competition at NTV School. The topic for the contest was “How we see Pakistan in 2050”. The students created interesting and dynamic pieces of work which showed their imaginative sense of the future.
Both Khatoon-e-Pakistan and SMB Fatima Jinnah attended a comic book workshop at Lincoln Corner on 24th December. As part of this workshop students made innovative comic strips. A student was alos recgnized and offered a job at Lincoln Corner to teach further kids due to her excellent work. Our students also kept themselves busy by attending an Art Festival at Sambara gallery. At this festival they also participated in a Block Art workshop. The management gave extremely positive reviews regarding the student’s participation. An official said “We were really happy to see these students hailing from a government school had a really good basis of the content. They participated in the workshop so confidently.”
The students also transgressd beyond just art in November at the Karachi biennale. The workshop was on documentary making and around 40 students from KPS attended the workshop. Our students received the second position for their documentary ‘Boltay Pathar’. The documentary was created independently by the students. From script writing, to shooting up till editing it was a completely student led project. We are indeed proud of this achievement and can’t wait to provide more opportunities for these students to unleash their true potential.
For the upcoming months various interesting activities have been planned for our students post examination. These activities will range from stress releasing activities to electric safety oriented activities in collaboration with K Electric. Students are also looking forward to the Summer camp with great interest and excitement that has interesting, creative art activities and competitions planned for them.
Zindagi Trust also believes in inspiring individuals beyond the scope of our four walls. Our Head of Art program, Ms Anam Shakil is currently working on an Art Curriculum. This curriculum will be the initiating curriculum in all government schools of Pakistan. The curriculum is currently in its final stages. In the month of March a focus group discussion was held inviting art educators to review the curriculum. This meeting had renowned names like Dr, Yasmeen Salman, Mehr Qadir, Aaliya Yousuf, Ayesha Nadeem and Nida Hashmi reviewing the curriculum that is due to be implemented in all government schools of Pakistan.
Furthering the attempt to inspire all and to spread creativity far and wide, Zindagi Trust is collaborating with Stream Pakistan. This project has been running since the start of the year. For this project our head of Art Program is developing 10 lesson plans and instructional videos which will be implemented in 1000 schools of Pakistan ranging from government schools to military schools in all provinces. These lesson plans also move beyond art as they attempt to integrate other subjects like science, social studies and Math with art. This encourages students to think creatively and critically but also spikes their interest in otherwise monotonous classes. These lesson plans will be detailed and will allow schools to create their own self sufficient art programs at their respective schools.
Our students have a deep love and appreciation for the art which is evident by their enthusiastic interest in their art classes, various art competitions and art gallery visits. Students view art as an opportunity to express themselves creatively. It is something we at Zindagi Trust encourage hoping that they may follow their passion for art even beyond their schooling years. We thank our community of donors for inspiring kindness in the world, allowing us to create art programs for these girls and to reciprocate it for many others as well.
