Sherry, who is developmentally delayed with limited verbal communication skills, participated in a 9-month art therapy program at Taichung City Child Development Center. During the first semester, the art therapist worked with Sherry individually, while in the second semester, Sherry joined in an art therapy group. Prior to participating in art therapy sessions, Sherry’s family had been through tough situations, which became stressors and caused her to be emotionally unstable in the classroom.
During the 4-month individual sessions, Sherry used teaching aids like dolls and figurines to reflect on the changes in her family relationships. It gave Sherry a non-verbal way to express her feelings and reduced her emotional outbursts in class.
When Sherry was put into a group in the second semester, she tried out a variety of different art materials. She was always the first one to pick up new materials on the table and fearlessly use them. Her adventurous spirit inspired the other children in the group as well.
“Sherry had developed a greater capacity for naming things after joining the class. I was deeply moved by this change. When facing changes in life, whether big or small, it is necessary to tell Sherry in providing advance notice remained essential for Sherry. However, she had gradually begun to express herself without bursting into anger, and as a result, I could communicate effectively with Sherry.”
