Summary

Pequespacio feminista was born in 2017 as a proyect of 4 women who wanted to stop violence against women starting from childhood. We started visiting neighbourhoods in suburbs of Oaxaca, with artistic workshops for children and their families, opening conversations on gender violence prevention and sexual diversity in childhood. We want to promote in the children and their families an awarenes of their rights and help raise a message of non-discrimination, social inclusion and self acceptance.

Challenge

Since 2016, more than 1700 agressions for gender reasons have been registered in Oaxaca. In 41 municipalities the gender alert has been turned on. There is an increase of new projects that start to arise sensibilization and prevention of violence, discrimination and gender issues. But still very few children have access to spaces where they can express freely, raise awareness, build a peace and non violent culture, within their families in outskirts neighbourhoods of the city of Oaxaca.

Solution

Pequespacio feminista creates through art and expression workshops, a safe space for inclusion and peace-building, promoting awareness, respect for sexual diversity and gender equity in early ages. An essential part is including families in the construction of self acceptance and peace, through sharing and dialogue of the experience of the children in the workshop, with a special focus in respect. Workshops will be offered as a summer course for children in low income Oaxacan neighbourhoods.

Long-Term Impact

"Pequespacio Feminista in your neighborhood", will reach at least 60 children and adolescents from the suburban areas of Oaxaca, in a summer course, where children will have a safe expression space, will help self-acceptance and inclusion, with respect to Diversity and peace building within their families. Through art and expression we can begin to build the culture of peace that we all want.
