In the heart of Antigua, Guatemala, something beautiful happens every afternoon. When the school bell rings and many children go home, dozens of others make their way to a place where learning continues - a place called Centro Soñador, or The Dreamer Center.
Operated by Asociación Nuestros Ahijados (ANA), the Dreamer Center is much more than an after-school program. It is a safe haven for children ages 5 to 16 who face poverty, neglect, and uncertainty at home. Every day, between 60 and 80 children walk through its doors - and for a few precious hours, they find safety, nourishment, and hope.
A Day at the Dreamer Center
At noon, the children are welcomed with a nutritious lunch, often their first full meal of the day. Around the tables, laughter replaces hunger, and friendships begin to bloom. This meal not only nourishes their bodies - it restores energy, dignity, and the joy of being cared for.
After lunch, the children begin their academic reinforcement sessions. Between 1:30 and 4:00 p.m., teachers and volunteers guide them through reading, writing, and math - the skills most critical for breaking the cycle of poverty. Learning here doesn’t feel like school; it feels like discovery.
Lessons are woven into stories, games, art, and teamwork. The children learn to read more fluently, to think creatively, and to trust their own voices. They also learn empathy, cooperation, and resilience - life lessons that build character and confidence for the years ahead.
Before heading home, everyone gathers for a light snack and a few moments of reflection. The children share what they’ve learned that day and how they’ve helped someone else. These small, heartfelt conversations strengthen their sense of belonging and remind them that their dreams matter.
Beyond Homework: Building Brighter Futures
For many of the children, the Dreamer Center is a lifeline. They come from families struggling with low income, food insecurity, or limited education. Many lack quiet spaces to study or adults who can help with homework. The Center bridges that gap, offering stability and support that transforms lives.
Every activity - from art and reading circles to emotional health workshops - helps them grow academically and emotionally. Over time, the changes are remarkable:
Improved reading and math skills.
Higher school attendance and motivation.
Stronger self-esteem and social confidence.
Better nutrition and focus.
Reduced risk of school dropout.
A Place Where Dreams Take Root
The Dreamer Center operates Monday through Friday, year-round, ensuring continuous support and growth. It is staffed by dedicated teachers, tutors, and volunteers who believe that every child deserves a chance - not just to survive, but to thrive.
Each child who enters this space is reminded that they are not alone. They are capable, worthy, and loved.
For more than three decades, The GOD’S CHILD Project has worked to break the cycle of poverty through education, healthcare, housing, and human dignity.
The Dreamer Center stands as one of its most powerful testaments - a place where education meets compassion, and where every notebook, every meal, and every kind word helps a child dream a little bigger.
Because of your support, these children are not only learning their lessons - they are learning that their lives matter. And that might be the most important lesson of all.
