Emily is a six year old from Guatemala. Born in Chimaltenango, she still lives there today with her mother and three older sisters. Tragically, Emily's father was kidnapped and murdered a few years ago while working as a taxi driver. Ever since then Emily's mother has fought to provide for her daughters, trying to give them all of the things they need to not only survive, but to thrive as well.
In search of support during the year following her husband’s death, Emily's mother found an organization in Guatemala that supports single mothers and was given economic and psychological support through this foundation. After a while, the director of this organization came to the GOD’S CHILD Project because Emily and her sisters needed a place to go to school free of charge and it was something their organization could not offer.
Emily was accepted into the Kindergarten class at the GOD'S CHILD Project’s Dreamer Center and quickly adapted very well to school. In addition to receiving an education, she received clothes, shoes, food and psychological support to overcome the trauma of losing her father at such a young age. Emily's sisters were also enrolled into school and given the same support. Currently, two of Emily's sisters are enrolled in the Dreamer Center with her and her oldest sister was given the opportunity to study at the Scheel Center. Thanks to donors who make supporting the education of these girls possible, all the girls now have hopes and dreams of becoming working professionals in the future.
With the support that Emily has received from The GOD’S CHILD Project she was able to graduate from kindergarten this fall at the head of her class and was recognized for her hard work and good grades with a special role in the commencement ceremony. Today she has many dreams she would like to accomplish, one of which is becoming a teacher so that she can teach other children when she grows up.
Emily's mother is very thankful for the support that her family has received from The GOD’S CHILD Project and recognizes the change she has seen in her girls since starting their education again. She is thankful that enrolling the girls has helped them to begin to return to having a normal life and is thrilled to see them full of hope and willing to dream once again.
Please join us in supporting the education of Emily and her sisters and other Guatemalan children struggling with the loss of a parent (or both) and living in poverty like them. Every child we provide with an education helps us move towards breaking the bitter chains of poverty for their families, giving them hope for a future.
