A Quiet Crisis

By Wida Arzow Azizi | Development Coordinator, Concern Worldwide US

With the increase of crises and emergencies across the world in the past year, global attention is being pulled in multiple directions. There are many ongoing crises we may no longer hear about, but that unfortunately does not diminish their severity or urgency--it just means that the suffering continues in silence. In 2024, we markthe 7th somber year since the escalation of violence against the Rohingya people by armed forces in Myanmar, forcing them to flee into neighboring Bangladesh in search of safety. Concern Worldwide has maintained a presence in Bangladesh for over 50 years, and swiftly responded to the crisis in 2017 when it began.

The Rohingya people are an ethnic minority group that constitute the largest stateless population in the world; their historical suffering predate2017, marked by denial of citizenship, limited access to education, job and health services, leading to chronic poverty and marginalization. Nearly one million people have sought refuge in congested and informal camps across Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh, one of the world’s largest refugee settlements. The surrounding areas of Cox’s Bazar are historically low-income, and 25% of the overall population of Bangladesh is estimated to be food insecure, with comparable levels of malnutrition.

Together with UN agencies, over 130 local, national, and international nonprofits (including Concern) have supported the Government of Bangladesh to adjust to this increase in capacity. Striving to mitigate the socio-economic and environmental tension between the refugees and host communities, Concern’s programs expand to incorporate affected populations in Bangladesh. Our initiatives include emergency responses, such as those related to climate-induced disasters, health and nutrition, urban development, and livelihood programs.

Safety and security remain serious concerns for the Rohingya living in Cox's Bazar, where informal camps are often destroyed in seasonal floods and fires. Overcrowded camp settlements with poor conditions also face the constant threat of dangerous weather, especially during monsoon season. Cyclone Mocha, a category-storm, devastated the coastline of Bangladesh and Myanmar just six months ago, impacting thousands in communities that were already vulnerable. Our teams kicked into gear as early warning systems signaled and provided aid to both refugee and host communities, with plans put in place and stocks of food prepositioned to provide emergency assistance. Our responses include distribution of meal and food vouchers, providing access to health and nutrition services, disaster risk reduction programs and shelter rehabilitation.

Dangerous weather conditions and seasonal flooding also exacerbate the existing limitations on access to clear water, hygiene, and sanitation services, fostering conditions for waterborne illnesses such as cholera and diarrhea to spread across camps. In response to the common barriers faced by refugees in accessing healthcare, Concern has implemented the Smart Health Card program, which serves as a financial support tool, targeting impoverished families to subsidize healthcare costs. As a prominent nutrition agency in the Rohingya response, Concern continues to play a pivotal role by providing crucial lifesaving and preventative nutrition services across refugee camps and host communities in Cox’s Bazar. Our teams continue to work diligently to ensure that Rohingya refugees can meet their basic needs and are supported with access to clean water, sanitization, and hygiene (WASH) facilities, and shelter while maintaining as much dignity as possible.

The future of this crisis remains uncertain as the Rohingya refugees endure one challenge after another. They are faced with severe funding crises and erasure, and lack of international investment in their people endangers the population’s overall recovery and rehabilitation. Concern's ongoing initiatives offer hope, but increased international and donor support is crucial to providing sustainable and long-lasting relief for this historically marginalized ethnic group.
