Books, books, books! The Virgin Islands Children’s Museum has accepted a donation of hundreds of early learner books and teacher resource books which will be the heart of the 8th At Home Discovery Kit. The VICM is a science, technology, reading, engineering, arts / humanities, and mathematics based organization which takes the R in STREAM very seriously. Literacy rates are improved with early interventions and access to reading materials in the home and places of learning. We aim to create a discovery kit for teachers (institutional and untraditional) that will provide books for kids to read at home and teacher guides to bolster reading practice and reading comprehension in the classroom.

We are currently brainstorming and developing a permeable surfaces/ watershed stewardship hands-on activity to accompany the books and school supplies that will go into the kit. Discovery Kit 8 is slated for distribution early in the 2023/24 school year.

We anticipate help from the U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Health Immunization Program, theU.S. Virgin Islands Department of Planning and Natural Resources Division of Coastal Zone Management, the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands, the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts, Island Landscape and Designs LLC, and generous donations from the public via our ongoing GlobalGiving.org fundraising initiative: At Home Discovery Kits for VI Families (47832), to facilitate this initiative.

Thank you for supporting the Virgin Islands Children’s Museum At Home Discovery Kit program!

Sincerely,

The VICM Team
