It was great that we could spend 2 nights on overnight buses, and 2 nights and 3 days on aPepperFarm in Ratanakiri Province. It was such a blessing and a meaningful trip for us all.
The Purpose of the trip: ‘To let our club members reflect on what they learned in our clubs over that last year, how they were changed from participation in those Growth Groups/Clubs, and to help them plan to pay that investment forward to others who need their help.
Dovehas been helping hundreds of teens and young adults to heal emotionally and process their levels of vicarious trauma through our programs (Men group, Alateen, Leadership Clubs,) and we want to continue with our mission of addressing mental health, but more than that, we want to encourage our young peopleto reach out and help other students/participants who attend our clubs and especially those in their neighborhoods, schools, workplaces, and communities. We don’t ask them to pay DOVE back for what we have done for them, but we want them to pay it forward.
What did we do at the retreat?
Our trip went well. Everything there was beautiful and meant a lot to us. The students said 4 nights and 3days for seemed likea short time for them. They really enjoyed the retreat and wanted to spend more time there and they want to come back and do another retreat of this type.
A testimony from a participant:
Sambath, an 18 years old teen. He has been attending the leadership club for 10 months. He is active in the club, comes to the club and meeting groups regularly, and likes to answer every queston, completed all tasks the club required, pays attention, like to share, and learn from others. ….but before these happened he used to be the one who is silent, isolated from others,
I don’t like or working with children because they looks annoying and hard to to control them, he said. But till he got a chance to join the club and had learned many things through lessons and clubmates' experiences of lives then little by little, time by the time he started to open his mind and heart to accept and learn from people.
- I have a close friendship with my dad better than before, I learned to accept and understand him than just blame or complain.
- Mission: when I saw kids smile made me smile with a big excitement heart and more than that when they received a gift (school supplies) and I washed their hairs from me then their said; “ Thank you, teacher”. I felt awesome.
This trip means lot to me I had great times with friends and people there and special than that is the mission…..It has changed my mind and heart, I felt love while we were spending time and serve those children till I get back to Phnom Penh now I decided to work as a part time English teacher for teaching children at slum which….
