Athletes Without Frontiers (AWF) has established a global community of socially-conscious endurance athletes who support charity through perseverance in sports. WISER, their first partner, empowers underprivileged girls in rural Kenya by improving health and education. Their goal on GlobalGiving is to raise $30,000 to provide scholarships to students. The overall goal is $1 million to raise money for additional scholarships, solar power, and a computer lab for the campus.
In Kenya, girls often don't complete secondary school due to early pregnancy, arranged marriages, and physical and psychological abuse. Girls who do complete secondary school often do so with low grades and cannot go to college. Half of sexually active girls have sex for money to stay in school, elevating their HIV risk. Girls need a safe and healthy environment to succeed and become the new female leaders in Kenya.
WISER provides everything a girl needs: clothes, books, the first bed she has ever slept in, healthy food, supportive teachers, mosquito nets, HIV education, and essential medicine. This project will help increase the number of students to 240, provide solar power, a computer and mobile lab, and internet access for the campus. Help us get girls in school, turn on the lights, and connect them with the world.
WISER provides safe and effective education for girls, reduces child pregnancy, marriage, and HIV risk. As educated women, WISER alumni will have healthier children and better reproductive health. 85% of WISER alumni go to college or university, when before only one girl had gone in 30 years. WISER girls become community leaders and change makers.
