In the Peruvian Amazon, Awajun indigenous women safeguard ancient wisdom and healing practices passed down through generations. Cultural pressures and lifestyle shifts, however, hinder them from sharing and preserving this invaluable knowledge. Our initiative aims to rescue and fortify Awajun women's medicinal traditions, thwarting the erosion of ancestral wisdom. Support us in establishing medicinal gardens in the Huascayacu native community.
Awajun indigenous women face erosion of their ancestral knowledge, influenced by cultural and social factors. Resulting in diminished use of traditional medicine and the loss of crucial insights into medicinal plants. Cultural pressures and insufficient recognition further marginalize these women, who play a pivotal role as bearers of essential health knowledge. Adding to the challenge, female healers often face false accusations of witchcraft, intensifying the hurdles they endure.
Preserve Tradition: Provide a space for growing and sharing medicinal plants, encouraging the transmission of knowledge. Empower Women: Boost recognition and empower women as health and culture custodians through managing medicinal gardens. Facilitate Dialogue: Create spaces for communication between Awajun women and younger generations, promoting knowledge transmission. Document Heritage: Record teachings and practices through audiovisuals, helping preservation of their knowledge.
1. Autonomy and Self-Management: Empowering Awajun women to oversee and expand medicinal gardens, ensuring autonomy and sustainability. 2. Cultural Recognition: Fostering societal acknowledgment of Awajun women's pivotal role in preserving traditional medicine. 3. Opportunity Generation: Opening avenues for educational programs, intercultural research, and sustainable tourism rooted in Awajun medicine richness. This will be posible with the field collaboration of Alkamari Social Conservation.
