Summary

This project on campaigns on cervical cancer screening is centered on educating at least 3000 females in Northern, Zambia, on access to cervical cancer prevention and screening for intervention to safe life to reduce mortality rates associated with cervical cancer complications. The project will raise awareness of the challenges faced by women and girls who are affected by cervical cancer, particularly those in rural areas through short educational films and community outreach activities.

Challenge

The population of Zambia has illiteracy levels of over 60% according to the country's 2010 census of population and housing. With a population of 1,056,592.35 (81%) rural based in Northern Zambia, access to educational information and health facilities such as that related to cervical cancer is a challenge. Rates of cervical cancer are more than twice as high in Zambia compared to the global average. This project will affect 3000 women annually from the rural districts of Northern Zambia.

Solution

Rakellz Dream Initiative will launch territory-wide cervical cancer screening awareness programme in collaboration with other health care professionals to facilitate and encourage women to have regular cervical smears. The project will use film and drama to translate cervical cancer information into a visual message that can easily be understood by people that cannot read and/or write. We believe that this problem can be better solved when the people its intended for are involved in the fight.

Long-Term Impact

The project will help increase by up to 60% of the Northern Province numbers of people actively seeking cervical cancer screening; women appreciating the true causes, prevention and treatment of cancer rather than traditional beliefs such as attributing the disease to witchcraft and more women living with cervical cancer actively seeking medical help thereby improving the quality of life among rural communities in Northern province.
