Kalimera!
As Ioannina entered the hot months of the Greek summer, the community centre became quieter, allowing our team of volunteers to spend quality time with the participants around iced coffees and UNO games. As the summer slowly ends, we are expecting busier days ahead and new registrations from people being transferred from the islands. In the last 3 months, we registered 205 new participants, mostly from Sudan and Somalia.
As our team of international volunteers became smaller during summer, we rely more and more on our amazing team of community volunteers. Their commitment and dedication is always deeply appreciated. With their help, we have started organising monthly community meetings, during which we ask participants for ideas and feedback, and address any topic that might be useful.
From the fundraising side, we have organised in June a campaign focused on the free shop, for us to be able to buy items that are highly requested, such as socks and underwear, caps, backpacks and hygiene items. Between May and July, 4,037 items were shopped and 1,032 people visited our shop.
As for the services, we have 2 main updates. Whilst coffee and tea used to be self-service, we now have a dedicated coffee corner, with a volunteer acting as a barista to prepare the various drinks requested by participants. According to the feedback we’ve received, it’s a very popular station. In the Women's Space, we also have now a beauty salon twice a week, with one of our community volunteers offering waxing sessions. It is so popular that we had to decide to put a limit of sessions per month.
Thank you for your support!
