Dear all,
This summer, thanks to your continued support and our wonderful team of volunteers, we managed too offer new services to our participants and improved existing ones.
The Medical Clinic
After a needs assesment conducted in June that showed a gap in refugees' access to medical assistance and basic healthcare, the NGO Med'Equali Team decided to set up shop in Ioannina. Every Friday, two to four doctors, nurses and medical students come to the Community Centre to set up a clinic and treat whoever needs it. As always, this service is completly free and open to everyone no matter their nationality, gender, sexual orientation or any other characteristics.
We are more than happy to let other NGOs use our space for their activities. This is the beauty of our Community Centre as a place where everybody comes together to access some basic services but also for social, educationnal and creative workshops.
Stop-Motion Animation Workshops
In June and July, the NGO Hirundo held stop-motion animation workshops per week with our participants. In these workshops, they could discover the magic (and hard work) behind making grains of rice dance on screen. After weeks of work, a movie was made about the friendship of two of our particpants, Marzia and Nour. To know more about their work, check out their Instagram page.
Barber Shop
Badr, one of our Community Volunteer, had the idea of opening a Barber Shop in our Community Centre. He is a master of the trimmer and wanted to use his skills to support his community. After a quick stop at Jumbo to buy all the supplies, we opened the Barber Shop on the 20th of July. It is now running every Saturday and is really succesful. Every week, between 5 to 10 people get their hair cut at our Community Centre.
Language Fridays
Since the end of July, we run Language Cafes every Friday. The goal is for our volunteers to teach the basics of their own language to the particpants. As of today we ran 5 German cafes and 3 French cafes. The goal is to continue running German cafes that are in high demand and start English and Arabic cafes.
As you can see, we have had a busy summer so far! As always, we look forward to keeping you in touch in the coming months and in the meantime, you can keep up to everything BAAS through our Instagram or Newsletter.
Thank you very much,
The BAAS Team
