Baking for Independence

**"Empowering Lives Through Baking: A Story of Growth and Teamwork"** Xiao Jia (name anonymized for privacy), a young man with mild intellectual disabilities, has been working in the pastry and baking section for nine years. After two and a half years of dedicated effort, Xiao Jia has proudly earned the title of a junior pastry chef. Imagine the sense of accomplishment he feels as he carefully arranges the dough and slides it into the oven, knowing his hard work is about to create something wonderful! While the cookies bake to perfection, his peers in the packaging area meticulously arrange gift boxes, preparing them to hold the finished treats. Here, there are no "barriers"—only mutual support and collaboration. Everyone works wholeheartedly in their respective roles, contributing to a shared goal! The Joyful Life Foundation is dedicated to supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities by providing **vocational training** in **bakeries, restaurants, and sheltered workshops** across Taiwan. These training programs help participants build self-reliance, enhance workplace skills, and create bright futures for themselves.

Xiaoyi (alias), 28 years old, has been working at the Zhubei workshop for seven years. She has a mild intellectual disability. I remember the first time I greeted her, she didn’t respond in the same way, only giving me a brief glance. Over time, through continuous interaction, I discovered that Xiaoyi is simply a bit slow to warm up to people. In reality, she has a lively personality, loves to joke, and often brings joy to her coworkers in the assembly area.

Although Xiaoyi might appear casual on the surface, she takes her work very seriously. She always strives to do her best with every task assigned to her, and the quality of her work is impeccable. Whether it's packaging large cookies or boxing snacks, none of these tasks are too difficult for her.

After years of training, her biggest challenge remains assembling highly variable box sets. The workshop offers many different types of boxes and contents, and remembering all of them has been a significant challenge for Xiaoyi. She once lacked confidence in this task and was reluctant to practice it.

However, with continuous positive encouragement and support from the employment counselors, Xiaoyi gradually became willing to practice this task alongside them. When she achieved the set goals, she beamed with happiness and discovered newfound confidence and a sense of accomplishment. She became more willing to discuss her work and training methods with the counselors and even began sharing small details about her daily life.

In the past, whenever the employment counselors asked Xiaoyi about the possibility of seeking employment outside, she would always say, "I don't know, I’ll think about it." But recently, she told them that if a suitable opportunity arises, she would be open to learning more about it. I believe Xiaoyi has grown significantly and is much more confident than before. I hope that as she embarks on the path of outside employment, Xiaoyi will continue to believe in herself, improve her skills, and courageously face every opportunity and challenge that comes her way.
