Summary

The Hands On Tokyo Baseball Project for Natural Disaster Survivors will unite three middle school boy baseball teams from Tohoku, Tokyo, and Kumamoto. The boys will divide their time equally between baseball and fostering meaningful dialogue about natural disasters with the goal of empowering young people to become strong contributors and leaders in their local communities. It is also an exciting once in a lifetime opportunity to practice baseball with professional baseball players.

Challenge

Within the past ten years, Tohoku and Kumamoto have both been struck by devastating earthquakes that have displaced families and hurt local economies. With this in mind, the baseball project was founded in 2016. Our goal is to show solidarity with communities in need, promote greater understanding about natural disasters, and give the children who have been through painful experiences a once in a lifetime opportunity to spend intensive time improving their passion for baseball.

Solution

Through team work, friendly competition, and listening to one another, the boys can learn about disaster relief strategies, listen to the experiences of earthquake survivors, and empower survivors of natural disasters. This project is more than just a baseball workshop. It is also about the special relationships that are fostered throughout the project.

Long-Term Impact

As a result of participating in this program, boys from Tokyo will have more knowledge about natural disasters and become advocates for their peers. The baseball teams from Kumamoto and Tohoku will also become advocates for people in need in their communities, while also discussing ways they can help now. Alongside all of this personal growth, the boys will be perfecting their baseball skills.
