The health of 12,000 extremely poor people in Senegal depends on Sor's Maternal and Childcare Health Center However, it lacks basic equipment and the roof is about to collapse. This project will provide basic health equipment and repair the roof to protect pregnant women and children.
In Senegal, health posts are essential to ensure population health. In areas with high poverty rates, such as St-Louis, the service they provide is essential as health problems put the lives of the most vulnerable at risk; specially newborn, young children and pregnant women. Sor's Maternal and Child Health Center serves 12,000 people, however it lacks basic equipment and is in poor condition, so it cannot deal with emergencies such as caesarean sections or chilbirth complications.
This project would support the renovation of the roof and buy basic health equipment, in order to allow Sor's health staff to address the problems they face, reducing the risk of children's death. Sor's has only two hospitalisation beds. Therefore, in addition to basic medical equipment (treatment trolley, episiotomy box, delivery box, treatment box, sphygmomanometers, etc.), it is intended to provide 6 more hospitalisation beds, a delivery bed and a consultation table.
This project is part of a wider programme that medicusmundi is carrying out in Saint Louis, which includes, among other actions, the training of personnel and the improvement of the facilities and equipment of the health centres. This will improve the service provided by the public health system in Senegal, which is essential for guaranteeing the health of the poorest and most vulnerable people, enabling them to grow up healthy and helping to break the cycle of poverty.
