Summary

Vulnerable children suffer the most in Venezuela. Food insecurity, hunger, malnutrition, a broken hospital care explain the highest mortality rates, at some point with 6-7 children dying every week, and school dropout at +50%. Be the hero for +10,000 newborns & children, +1,000 students & teachers, and +300 health care workers that rely on Friends for nutritional supplements, formulas, medicines, medical supplies, and even a daily meal as an incentive to attend and stay at school.

Challenge

About 5.4 million Venezuelans have left the country since 2014, to find work, food, better healthcare & stability. Of the 28 million staying, 94% lives in poverty & 77% in extreme poverty, up from 68% in 2020. Venezuelans have lost purchasing power due to lack of employment, hyperinflation, currency devaluation, minimum wage around $3 a month, etc. 90% of schools don't have the Student Feeding Program (PAE) normally given by the government so children study hungry or dropout school to seek food.

Solution

Through our local teams, our 2 programs in health, nutrition, and education, provide +10,000 vulnerable newborns & children and +300 health care workers at a pediatric hospital with all sort of baby supplies, nutritional items, medicines, hospital supplies & surgical equipment, etc. Moreover, +1,800 students & teachers at 4 public schools will receive a daily nutritional meal as an incentive to return or stay at school, and thus, reduce dropout rates from +50% to 3% or lower.

Long-Term Impact

Children starve & die in Venezuela. We save the lives of children in critical medical conditions and at high risk of malnutrition. Food & education are critical for the economic, social & cultural development of any society. Yet, they are inaccessible. Children who eat and go to school are healthier, develop knowledge, have more confidence in themselves and are much more likely to become professionals. We save lives and a generation that is considered lost. We give hope to +12,000 beneficiaries.
