As the year draws to a close we reflect on what we have done and how this has changed lives for the better. AIL has 4 fixed site health clinics as well as outreach health units at a Learning Center and at an orphanage and street children facility. AIL’s Herat health program also supports 14 Community Health Workers (CHWs) posts. The health program has treated 192,207 patients and given health education lessons to 145,251 people.

Stories are the best way for us to show how you help poor Afghans improve their lives and communities. Having access to quality health education is vital to maintaining a healthy body and mind. Here is one of our favorite stories from the year. One health workshop attendee said, “When I was a young girl, I was picking tree nuts by throwing stones. One stone hit my head and I began to bleed. I was afraid to tell my parents so I put some dust on my injury. Three days later when my mother was bathing me she noticed the injury and asked what it was. She took me to the doctor who dressed the wound and said if we had waited any longer I could have Tetanus. It is important we build friendly relations with our children so they can share their problems without fear. I am doing this with my children and telling my story so others can see how important it is to know about health.”

Newsflash: Dr. Yacoobi is one of BBC 100 Women 2017!

AIL has 4 fixed site health clinics as well as outreach health units at a Learning Center and at an orphanage and street children facility. AIL’s Herat health program also supports 14 Community Health Workers (CHWs) posts.

People are very aware of the lack of good health facilities and the impact this has on lives. Fatama, a student at the Baran Medical Institute had this to say: "One of my dreams is that in the future all the Afghan women have access to health services. When I go to the distant rural areas and observe the lives of people, I see how destitute our people are. There are no medical services available, and they suffer from severe illnesses. Therefore, with the help of my classmates we voluntarily formed a team and went to the far distant areas where poor people were living. We trained the people of the areas on some issues about health and some first-aid activities for them to be sufficient in emergency aid. To continue our goals, we are more motivated to expand our work and also we have considered to expand our team too."

In one month, AIL Clinics have treated 16,310 patients and provided health education to 12,054 people. Some of the most popular health education topics this month included, breast feeding, family planning, vaccinations and nutrition. This month 5,001 patients were vaccinated, 1,282 attended for reproductive health services and 1,384 children were assessed for nutritional status. There were 26 healthy babies delivered at clinics in the month. AIL health educators stress the greater safety of clinic birth and how it helps prevent maternal and child deaths which results in increasing clinic/hospital birth rates. Community Health workers at 14 posts in Herat made 3,061 family visits and treated 579 cases of ARI and 186 cases of diarrhea.
